A Message from our General Director

Ben Robinson, General Director

“As we enter the end of the year, I’m reflecting on the whirlwind of starting my position as the General Director of Anchorage Opera, getting to know my new Anchorage community, and exploring the possibilities for what opera can be in this great state. There’s a bright future for this art form, especially in a community as creative and collaboratively-minded as Anchorage. Of course, this is built on the generosity of our patrons; you have sustained us for over 60 years, and again we are coming to you to ask for your support.

For an “ARTful Start to 2024”, I’m pleased to share that donations of $200 or more will be eligible to enter a drawing to win an original oil painting by acclaimed contemporary Vietnamese artist, Trinh Khoa. If you would like to be entered after donating, let us know by contacting Judy Berry at jberry@anchorageopera.orgDrawing will take place on January 12, 2024.

After our retro dive into the 80s with The Elixir of Love, we are looking forward to two more spectacular productions this season. Derrick Wang’s remarkably funny and poignant Scalia/Ginsburg is up February 2, 3, and 4. This comic one act opera explores the unlikely friendship shared between the two late Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. If opera can bring those two together, we think it can do wonders for the rest of you! On April 26, 27, and 28, Giuseppe Verdi’s powerful and thrilling La traviata will thrill audiences at the PAC. With its heart-wrenching melodies, sweeping love story, and world-class singers, this will be an event that you can’t miss!

There’s more: in May and June, Anchorage Opera will be teaming up with UAA to launch the first ever Alaska Artist Development Program. This three-week residency will offer advanced training to emerging young professional singers and an introduction to a life in music for high school students from south central Alaska. It will culminate in a special performance of Francis Poulenc’s incredible one-act comedy, Les mamelles de Tirésias. Our aim is to create a vibrant pathway for talent development and an opportunity for the immense pool of gifted Alaskans to hone their skills and contribute further to the cultural fabric of the state.

Guess what? Producing opera isn’t easy or inexpensive. This thrilling art form brings everything together – singing, acting, dancing, the orchestra, lights, costumes, sets… the list goes on! Likewise, it’s a collaborative effort to bring the community together to support high quality professional work and continue to let Anchorage be a growing cultural beacon. In a time made ever more complicated by the shifting climate post-pandemic, it is more vital than ever that we can count on your contributions to help sustain our mission. Making a gift now is a wonderful way for you to support great art (and artists) in Alaska.

Your Gift Matters

When the curtain comes down at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, community building begins! We appreciate your gift in ANY amount especially as we continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and grapple with the increased cost of everything from paint to personnel. Your donation enables us to connect directly with our community in new and more meaningful ways helping us produce and perform main stage operas, educational programs and community collaborations for which we will engage the talents of some 400 singers, musicians and theatrical artists approximately 87% of which live in the greater Anchorage area. Thank you for your support!

Anchorage Opera acknowledges that we gather and are performing on the traditional lands of the Dena’ina Athabascans. For thousands of years the Dena’ina have been and continue to be the stewards of this land. It is with gratefulness and respect that we recognize the contributions, innovations, and contemporary perspectives of the upper Cook Inlet Dena’ina.
