Inspired by true stories from American history, An American Dream explores intersecting narratives of two women during World War II: a Japanese American, and her family, facing internment, and a German Jewish immigrant preoccupied by those she left behind. Hailed by the Seattle Times at its world premiere as “a heart wrenching opera…eloquent and moving”, this modern masterpiece resonates with local connections to Anchorage as well as our Alaska Native community.
Intended to foster conversations within the Anchorage community, we invite you to linger after each show for a Talk Back with the Composer/Conductor, Jack Perla, thecast & artistic team to discuss the production, social issues raised by the work and delve deeper into the civil-rights implications of this story and its themes of wartime hysteria, racism, and xenophobia.

This passionate, indelible story of four struggling young artists – a poet, a painter, a philosopher and a musician – and the women who change them forever, navigating life, love and loss in the Latin Quarter of Paris, will move you to both laughter and tears. Blending riveting theater and achingly beautiful music, Puccini’s masterpiece, can arguably stake its claim as the world’s most popular opera. Its sumptuous score and timeless tale speak just as deeply with contemporary audiences as at its premiere in 1896, even inspiring (100 years later) the 1996 Pulitzer prize and Tony Award winning rock musical RENT. Perfect for the first-time opera-goer, and lovers of all ages!
