Anchorage Opera Reschedules “Tosca” and “Take One: Tosca” Amid Coronavirus Pandemic
Dear Friends of Anchorage Opera,
Our deep commitment to our community means that we must ‘play our role’ in curbing the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic among us.
As we monitored the rapidly evolving situation, relying on information from local and national authorities, as well as our partners and colleagues in Anchorage, we came to the difficult decision to suspend all performances of Tosca (April 17, 18 & 19) at the Discovery Theatre in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and TAKE ONE: Tosca (April 5) at the private residence of Tim Pearson and Brian Chen. Your safety and well-being and that of our cast, crew, orchestra, technical team, venue staff and others, is our top priority. We are deeply saddened that we are unable to bring Puccini’s masterpiece Tosca and its preview event to our community as planned but we have recently been able to reschedule them both for next season. We’re thrilled to announce we also have contracted with the same stellar guest artists, designers and technical team originally in place for our production.
This decision to discontinue the remainder of our 2019-20 Season is in accordance with recommendations from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Governor Mike Dunleavy’s declaration of a public health emergency, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz’s “Hunker Down” order and the closure of our rehearsal and performance venue, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts by the City of Anchorage through March 31.
As you may imagine, the cancellation of our biggest production of the season seriously impacts our company financially. Our artists, too, many of whom have already invested a great deal of time and effort in their preparations, face difficult times.
But difficult times only serve to reaffirm our commitment to “Enrich. Inspire. Educate. Collaborate. Build Community, one note at a time”. As we work together to overcome this challenge, we’re humbled and grateful in the knowledge that our strongest asset is the continuing support of our community.
